New Site Design

You may have noticed that things look a little bit different around here. Well thanks to JJ Sandee, I get to spruce up the web site a little bit. Great job, by the way, JJ. Many thanks!

I was always weary of the cookie-cutter template that I was using with Comic Press. This has a bit more personality.

I plan to add some social media buttons shortly as well as a few other surprises down the road. But this is a good start.

The three things on my to do list are the following:

Work on backgrounds.

Develop specific personality for Strad and Pelet.

Work on Story!!

So more to come in the future. I hope you will drop by again. Maybe add a comment or two.

Thanks for dropping by.

Montreal Comic Con

I got back home late last night. This explains for the unsuaual delay with the strip today. Got home and crashed as soon as we unpacked the van.

The Montreal Comic Con experience was overall very good. I got to meet Alberto Ruiz and Laurie B. That was great.

Getting there was a bit freaky with the construction on the roads.  At one point, the pavement changed consistancy and made the car whistle… well… more like the sound of a jet engine reving up before take off. We thought for sure that the van was damaged.

The “Quality” Inn was under renovations and in a sketchy part of town. A man urinating on the hotel’s front wall was a bit of a bad sign. Once we got past the unpainted entrance, elevator and hallway, it got better. The room was nice and tidy.

I got to spend some time with my oldest daughter, Catherine. She was a real trooper. And I think we sold more stuff when she was manning the booth. :)

Once at the Con and all setup, I got an opportunity to talk to hundreds of people over a period of two days. Everyone was very nice and complementary towards my work. I even sold a few posters and books! My goal was to cover the cost of the prints, the hotel and other expences from the trip. I am happy to say that was not even a problem.

Overall it was a great experience. If any of you Montreal Comic Con Peeps have checked out Space Pest Removal, please make sure to leave a comment! Would love to know what you think!

iPad? meh. Inkling? Don’t mind if I do!

So! My iPad woes are over. The love for it is gone.

The iPad in my head is way more useful than what is out there today.  I wanted an iPad with more complex programs like Corel Painter and Adobe Photoshop. Not the bare bones stuff. I wanted pressure sensitivity with a point stylus. Not the nubby styluses that are out at the moment. So goodbye iPad. I already have an iPhone that covers 90% of  what the iPad can do. Oh! and it is a phone!

There is another little gizmo that caught my eye though. And her name is Inkling.

This little device by Wacom really looks innovative and practical. This little box hooks up to a sketchbook or paper at the top. Then you use the pen stylus to draw. The little box captures your pen movements and it can transfer the art into a computer via USB connection. Are you serious? I am excited!

This shows a lot of promise… for only $200 USD.

Much better price than an iPad and closer to what I want in terms of drawing functionality. You can create layers as you are drawing.
Crazy!

Inkling is not perfect. It only works with pen. I’d prefer lead. Or a whole bunch of brush options. It also only works with a surface as big as a letter sized paper (8.5 x 11).

The inkling is supposed to be available sometime this month.

You can find out more about it here: http://www.wacom.com/en/Products/Inkling

I will have a fun new toy and lots of money left over to buysome yummy art books. I’ll post some impressions on Inkling once I get it.

The Challenge is On

Today marks my first day back teaching at my day job.

I am looking forward to it. I teach drawing so it’s a oerfect fit. But now the challenge will be this: can I maintain this webcomic and website while juggling a fulltime job? Only time will tell. I am hopeful. I built a little buffer and I am excited to see a few changes that are coming soon.

Stay tuned!

Fireflies

I’ve always been amazed that we have animals on this planet that glows in the dark. It almost seems alien, right?

When I was a kid, I would love to spend an evening chasing and collecting fireflies. Hours could roll by and it would feel like minutes. Of course, I’d have the jar with some tiny holes punched through the lid. I’d carefully decorate it with blades of grass and some twigs. There shouldn’t be too much otherwise the fireflies would hide. And then the adventure would start. Waiting for the first firefly to appear. Then chasing them. It was so much fun.

If I was lucky, I would catch more than 10.  Then I’d set the jar on my night stand and watch what looked like a miniature lightning storm flash portions of my bedroom into view. To me, that was magical.

I would also would dutifully set them free first thing in the morning. If one would die that night I would be crushed, vow never to trap a bug again.

But night would fall again, and…well…they glow in the dark! How cool is that?
