Prepping for Calgary Comic Con Expo

I am about to do something a bit foolish. I am going to the Calgary Comic Con in June. Why is this foolish? Well I was hoping to start with a closer venue. But so far, this has been the closest in terms of the timing. I know only of one person in Calgary. And to make things even funnier, no one really knows about this website yet. So it is a bit of a futile journey. I am not expecting to sell out of anything at this stage… But I do want to experience an event like Calgary. And it is very exciting!

I have self published a book: The Art of Richtoon. It is a book of my art before the creation of Space Pest Removal. There might be a few aliens and robots that I might end up reusing in the strip events… but honestly…this is all pre-SPR Stuff.

My goal in Calgary is to raise awareness of this webcomic, Try to sell my book over there in the hopes that it, plus maybe a few extra goodies if I can get iot all organized, and get my How to Make Webcomics sign by Scott Kurts, Kris Straub and Dave Kellet (3 of the 4 webcomics horsmen). They are a huge reason why I finally decided to make this webcomic.

If I can hit those 3 point with some additional networking, I will be crazy happy with the whole experience. I am willing to go there and take a loss this time simply because I want the experience.

So If you are reading this, and are planning to be at the Calgary Comicon, let me know! I would love to see a familiar face.

I also plan to take pictures and post stuff over here.

That’s about it for now.

I want to encourage you all to comment on the site as well.

Expect the next strip first thing tomorrow!

It’s the End of the World as We Know it.

Another End of Times prediction is about to happen…or not. We will have to wait and see if this is The One. I am not holding my breath.  Mostly because I need to breath to live and also, if the world does end on Saturday at 6PM, presumably Eastern Standard Time, what will two lungs full of oxygen really do to help the situation?

If I could get to choose my apocalypse, I would gladly pick the Zombie Apocalypse option.  As farfetched as it sounds, not to mention impossible, it is the one I’d like to try to survive in.  Am I nuts? Maybe. But the CDC posted something on the subject.

http://emergency.cdc.gov/socialmedia/zombies_blog.asp

Back to prediction of our imminent global end game: Many have tried through the centuries to predict the end of humanity. And so far, it has been a 100% failure rate. Consider this. Someone only has to get it right once to win. I am not sure what the cosmic prize would be. It better be something more than what you would win if you correctly predicted the amount of jelly beans in a jar at some fair. If everything and everyone is gone; what could possibly be a good prize?

Well I guess this is a good time to take stock of what I have accomplished up to now.

-          I have a wife and 3 kids that I absolutely love.

-          I have a roof over my head.

-          I have a full time job teaching at Algonquin College (They pay me to draw and teach about drawing! How cool is that!).

-          I  self-published a book The Art of Richtoon

-          I just started this webcomic.

-          I’ve read the Zombie Survival Guide (I am ready).

So far, life has been good. It would be a shame to stop it now.

Sketchnights

I teach drawing at Algonquin College. One thing that we do every Spring and Summer when school is out, is meet once a week to sketch. It all started about 7-8 years ago when a bunch of recent grads and I would sketch at my house for fun. Word got around pretty quick and my little studio office was out grown. So we started to meet at a variety of places like the conference room at a local Chapters bookstore and various shopping mall food courts.

We eventually settled at the college’s rotunda, a mini food court. It’s really a seating with tables area with only one shop, the Portable Feast. The great thing about this is that the area is usually empty enough to accommodate all of us, there is food and since it is close to my office, I can bring out some of my books.

Always a fun time.

If you are in the Ottawa area, consider yourself invited!

Web Site Building

I am hoping to learn more about CSS and all of the bells and whistles that are available through ComicPress. If all goes to plan, the layout of this website is eventually going to look radically different than it does today.  But that is all secondary to the strip. That will always come first.

This is a fun time of the year for me because I get to draw and paint for myself.  If all goes well, I should have lots of fun images up on my blog in the very near future. http://richtoon.blogspot.com

Not much else to add at this stage.

Keep on reading…More to come on Friday.

Welcome to Space Pest Removal

This is a new project that I am working on. I finally figured out how to post in the blog! It’s a miracle! I am still working out a few more kinks but I am pleased to say that the fixes are minor and cosmetic.  Hope you enjoy the Antics of Strad and Pelet.

I went to the Sports Card and Comic Show at Landsdown Park today and met some great artists and comic book shop owners. It was great to see so many people passionate about comics all under one roof. I hope to take part in future events like this.

Anyways, enjoy the strip!  I plan to post every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
